Brad Guzan, the next world class goalkeeper?

January 28, 2008

brad-guzan.jpg Media reports are out that Celtic boss Gordon Strachan is looking to sign Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan as ‘one for the future’.

The report also added that Strachan said the move for Guzan did not mean that the number one goalkeeper Artur Boruc, who only recently signed a new deal this month, was poised to leave the club.

Strachan added that he is thinking about Brad as an investment for the future and said that if you get someone who could be good value for years then you go for it.

Guzan arrived at Celtic Park after starring for his country in a 2-0 friendly win over Sweden.

Guzan has played for the Under-18 United States national team and he got his first cap for the senior national team on February 19, 2006, against Guatemala. On November 7, 2007, Guzan was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

News are out that England football superstar David Beckham is bringing his LA Galaxy team to Shanghai, China’s largest city for a game against a team largely made out of youth players on March 5.

It is said that Beckham will play only 45 minutes to “avoid injuries” ahead of the start of the Major League Soccer (MLS) season in the United States.

Acccording to news reports, the team will be captained by the England star and will play China’s East Asia, a team of youngsters most of whom are less than 20 years old.

It is also said that Galaxy will play it safe with one of the world’s most expensive midfielder, who moved from Spanish club Real Madrid last season.

Beckham’s star appeal helped draw major attention for MLS from US fans but knee and ankle injuries limited him to five MLS appearances as Galaxy missed the playoffs in 2007 for the second year in a row.

According to the news report, the club could play one more game in China before the team heads to South Korea, the next leg of their Asia tour ahead of the MLS season opener in late March.

Newcastle United move for David Beckham

January 22, 2008

david-beckham1.jpg

Reports are out that Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan is making a sensational bid to bring LA Galaxy star David Beckham back to England.

Media reports says that Toon are out to sign Beckham in a plan hatched by Mike Ashley and backed by Kevin Keegan. It is said that Billionaire owner Ashley is making contact with key figures behind the scenes to find out whether Beckham would fancy a move to the Tyne.

The Newcastle owner knows that the former England skipper would sell shirts by the thousand at his club and also make them a world-wide brand. Newcastle’s shirts are made by adidas and Beckham is the face of the brand, so it would be a commercial masterstroke as well as a sound deal for footballing reasons.

Beckham, who was on good terms with Keegan when he was the England boss, has signed up for a lucrative spell in US football and is committed to it. But Ashley hopes the lure of Newcastle, Keegan and a better chance of staying in the England side will swing a transfer or loan deal.

However the case maybe, Ashley would have to compensate LA Galaxy and the MLS handsomely if he wants to take Beckham on a long-term contract.

Jozy Altidore, the next big thing from US

December 6, 2007

jozyaltidore_2.jpg

Josmer (Jozy) Altidore (born November 6, 1989 in Livingston, New Jersey) is a Haitian American soccer striker, who currently plays for the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer.

Born in New Jersey to Haitian parents, Altidore was born with a terrific shot. At age 5 his parents were afraid he would hurt the other team with his shot, making him play with the 8 year olds. He has played for the Under-17 United States national team, and was part of the U.S. squad at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship. He appeared as a substitute in the United States’ 3-1 win over Italy and 2-0 loss to the Netherlands.

Altidore made his professional debut 23 August 2006 as a substitute in a 3-1 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup loss to D.C. United. He scored his first professional goal at the age of 16, blasting a late 28-yard shot to beat Columbus 1-0 September 16, 2006. Scoring three times in seven appearances, including a crucial goal against the Chicago Fire on September 30 2006, Altidore became a fan favorite. With his goal in the second match of Red Bull New York’s two game play-off series against D.C. United in 2006, Altidore became the youngest player ever to score in an MLS play-off game.

There were also rumors circulating that Real Madrid are preparing to bid for the player but Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon told media that Real Madrid will not bring in any new players during the winter transfer period.
