Atletico Madrid sign Brazilian midfielder Assuncao

July 7, 2008

Paulo AssuncaoMADRID (AFP) - Atletico Madrid announced Sunday the signing of Brazilian midfielder Paulo Assuncao from Portuguese first division side Porto for an undisclosed fee.

The 28-year-old will join his new teammates at Atletico on Monday, the Spanish club said in a statement posted on its website without specifying the length of his contract.

Assuncao joined Porto in 2005 from AEK Athens but has been eager to leave the Portuguese club after falling out with its management.

Atletico said meanwhile that is was in talks with several clubs which are interested in signing its Portugal international Maniche, 30, ended last season out on loan at Inter Milan after having fallen out with coach Javier Aguirre.

"Returning to Atletico would be difficult, if not impossible. They sent me out on loan because of Aguirre, because we had great differences of opinion and being with him became impossible," he told sports daily Marca last month.

It is the fifth signing for Atletico which finished fourth in La Liga last season and will therefore return to the Champions League stage after an 11-year absence.

The club has signed defenders Johnny Heitinga from Dutch side Ajax and Tomas Ujfalusi from Italian side Fiorentina as well as French keeper Gregory Coupet from Lyon and French striker Florent Sinama Pongolle from Recreativo Huelva.

Real Madrid will pay ‘whatever it takes’ to take Cristiano Ronaldo away from Man United

June 23, 2008

Real Madrid are prepared to smash the world transfer record with an £80 million bid for Cristiano Ronaldo after the Spanish club’s manager, Bernd Schuster, said they would “pay whatever it takes” to lure the Portuguese winger from Old Trafford.

With the Spanish champions also offering to pay Ronaldo £182,000-a-week after tax, the potential deal is nearly double what is currently the biggest transfer in football history which occured when Zinedine Zidane joined Madrid from Juventus for £46 million in 2001.

Record breaker? Cristiano Ronaldo may fetch £80m for Man Utd

With Ronaldo having announced his “dream” of joining Madrid, the club expect the 23-year-old to force United’s hand over the sale, or put in a transfer request. Madrid may offer a cash-plus-player deal involving Wesley Sneijder or Robinho.

Ronaldo is expected in Manchester this week for assessment on a foot injury, though no meetings are scheduled with United’s hierarchy - both Sir Alex Ferguson and chief executive David Gill are on holiday and have no plans to rush back to make any fresh appeal to the club’s star player.

Ronaldo’s contract runs until 2012 and, after releasing a statement in which they said that the player was not for sale, United appear content to keep Madrid waiting.
When they do meet, Ferguson and Gill are expected to try and persuade Ronaldo to spend at least one more season at United.

Real Madrid makes world record bid for Man Utd’s Ronaldo

April 9, 2008

cristiano-ronaldo.jpg Sensational transfer news are out and it is reported that Spanish giants Real Madrid are ready to bid a world record £80 MILLION for Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Media report says that the latest offer by the Spanish club will succeed the £70 million bid made by them last for the Portugal star. However, it is also believed that sources close to United has told media that the United board won’t consider the world record breaking offer as it said that the bid still doesn’t meet their valuation.

Ronaldo is currently the top scorer in the English Premier League and is also the current leader in the standings for the European Golden Boot, the award for the European top goal scorer, with a six-point lead ahead of second-placed Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
