Succi signed for Palermo because of a phone call
September 7, 2008

Interesting story today from Tuttosport. On the last day of the transfer window, Palermo signed 26 year old striker Davide Succi from Lega Pro side Ravenna. The Milan youth team product was one of the best strikers in Serie B last season, scoring 18 goals but unable to save Ravenna from relegation. Succi also scored 2 goals vs. Palermo in the Coppa Italia this preseason. Palermo were linked with the striker for the rest of the summer but on the last day of the transfer window, various sources reported he was minutes away from signing with Atalanta. However, something allowed Palermo to stop the deal and steal Succi from the Bergamaschi. What was it?
A phone call from Palermo goalkeeper Marco Amelia. The Azzurri back-up keeper called up Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini (who was looking for a striker anyway) and told him to hurry up and sign Succi. Zamparini listened and made the deal happen. Succi is now a Palermo player. I guess Amelia was so impressed with the two goals he let in vs Ravenna?
