Olympic dream over for Rocchi and Marchisio
August 12, 2008

He was the surprise call-up to begin with. Everyone looked at Casiraghi’s Olympic call-ups and said with a puzzled look, “Rocchi?” (come on, you know you did it). Casiraghi gave his explanation, saying the Lazio hitman was an experienced player, a model professional, and an excellent addition to the Italy side who could score many goals in this Olympic games. Well now, his Olympic dream is over. Rocchi sat out the first game because he felt a problem in his calf after a challenge in training from Andrea Ranocchia. He recuperated for the second game and even scored a goal in Italy’s 3-0 victory over South Korea. However after the game the former Juventus youth team product went under tests because he was still feeling pain and the doctors told Rocchi that he had to take a 4 week rest and therefore would miss the rest of the Olympics. Rocchi himself said that he held in his tears until he got to his room. Rocchi will stay and watch the Cameroon game and then fly back to Italy. 20 year old fantasista and new Napoli signing Andrea Russottowill take his place.
However there is other injury news as midfielder Claudio Marchisio has been ruled out as well. He also has a calf problem, and won’t recover in time to play a part in any of the remaining games, so he also is going home. To replace the Juventus midfielder is 20 year old Antonio Candreva, a midfielder who is owned by Udinese but is on loan at Livorno for the coming season.
